New Website Coming

We are going to be launching a new athletic website for the high school and middle school.  The company we are using is VNN (varsity news network).  I will be shutting down this site a few months after we get the new site up and running.  There are going to be many benefits to the website.  You will be able to sign up for alerts and up-to-date scores after each contest.  I will be maintaining the site and I will be transferring the same information to the new site.

******SCHOOL LEVY******

May 6th, 2014 the Jefferson Local Board will be placing a 1% earned income tax on the ballot.  If approved, this increase would not take effect until 2015.  It has been over 20 years since the district sought a new operating levy.  The district has done its best to withstand the $1,000,000 cut in annual funding from the state.  The district has cut over $800,000 two years ago while the staff and administrators have taken pay freezes throughout the years.  Support of this levy is essential for continuation of our basic school operations.

West Jefferson Roughriders 17 Badin 6

Game Recap
by Roger Jester

Gusty winds and a snowed covered field could not hamper West Jefferson from achieving something not done by a Roughriders football team since 1982.  The senior-laden Riders    (12-1) grounded out another solid performance to defeat Hamilton Badin 17-6 at Good Samaritan Stadium (Clayton Northmont) to win a regional championship and earn an appearance in the Division V state semifinals.  An incredible effort by West Jeff’s offensive line and the persistence of its backs led to 278 rushing yards.  Logan Stepp gained 175 yards on 27 carries, Hayden Fulton contributed with 13 rushes for 66 yards (all in the second half) and was joined by Earl Braithwaite and Tyler Jones to embrace another blue-collar effort.   Following a scoreless opening quarter, the Roughriders Steven Lollo kicked a 31-yard field goal to put the first points on the scoreboard and give the Riders a lead that it would maintain for remainder of the game.   After a short punt by the Rams (10-3) from its own endzone, Earl Braithwaite pushed his way from 1 yard out to give West Jefferson a 10-0 advantage at halftime.   The opening series of the second half would see West Jefferson take almost six minutes off of the clock and get deep into Badin territory, but the Rams defense put up a solid stance in its hope to change the momentum of the game.  Two long runs by Cole Heflin would get the Rams into scoring position, but the Riders defense forced Badin into a field goal attempt that fell short of the goalpost.  Unfortunately for the brown and gold, a roughing the kicker penalty kept the Rams drive alive and Zach Larkin connected with Matt Kreke on a 3-yard touchdown pass to cut the deficit to 10-6, but the extra point was blocked by West Jeff’s Zach Thomas.   West Jefferson expanded the gap to 17-6 in the fourth quarter when Stepp sprinted for 18 yards on fourth-and-two, the drive covering 74 yards on 11 plays.  The defense held Badin to 180 total yards and was led by Trevor Ferguson, Louis Weymss, DJ McAninch, Nick Mendenhall and Jake Hatfield.  Carter Harris led the offensive line in its solid push and he also recovered a fumble which he returned for 37 yards and forced another fumble that was recovered by Ferguson.   The Roughriders will travel to Piqua Alexander Stadium and face the Coldwater Cavaliers (11-2) in the state semifinals.  Kickoff is 7pm on Saturday, November 30.  The winner will advance to the Division V State Championship game and will play the winner of Bishop Hartley and Akron Manchester.

Game Recap
by Roger Jester

A potent ground attack and turnover inducing defense helped West Jefferson advance past a strong North Union (10-2) team in a Division V regional semifinal game on Saturday night.  The Roughriders (11-1) used the running game to control time management on offense, and created five turnovers, including four interceptions to defeat the Wildcats 37-20 at Hilliard Bradley High School.   The Roughriders received the opening kickoff and kept the ball for almost the first seven minutes of the game with Earl Braithwaite finishing the 16-play drive on a 13-yard rushing touchdown.  The sophomore running back finished the game with 74 rushing yards on 14 attempts, including eight carries for 48 yards during the contest’s opening drive.   Stepp intercepted Hayden Stofcheck just three plays into the Wildcats first series and returned the interception 51 yards to lift West Jefferson’s lead to 14-0 during the opening quarter.   A 1-yard touchdown run by North Union’s Stofcheck cut the Roughriders lead to 14-7.  However, continuous pressure by West Jefferson’s  defense on the Wildcats quarterback produced big plays for the brown and gold, as Hayden Fulton had two first half interceptions to stall scoring threats by North Union, and a quarterback-sack by Steven Lollo at the Wildcats one yardline would set up a safety for the victors.  The versatile Fulton also assisted the Riders rushing game by gaining 50 yards on 11 attempts.  The quarterback-seeking Lollo, who also serves as the Roughriders placekicker, connected on all five of his extra point attempts to become West Jefferson’s all-time career kick-scoring leader.   Another sophomore standout Trevor Ferguson, who tied with Louis Weymss for a team-high twelve tackles, took down North Union’s punter in the end zone for the safety and bumped the Riders advantage to 16-7.  Jake Hatfield and Nick Mendenhall were also top tacklers for West Jeff, and produced several hard hits during the game.    The Wildcats Stofcheck connected with Thane Hoffman in the final seconds of the first half to cut the deficit to 23-14 as the teams headed to the locker rooms.   Opening the second half, North Union appeared to carry the momentum from the late first-half touchdown as they advanced deep into the Roughriders territory, but the Riders’ Mendenhall put a helmet on the ball and recovered a Wildcats fumble at the two yard line.  West Jefferson took advantage of the fourth Wildcats turnover and drained over seven minutes off the clock during a 15-play 98-yard drive, capped by Stepp’s second rushing touchdown, this one from two yards out.   The Wildcats Stofcheck and Hoffman hooked up a second time midway through the final stanza, but a failed two-point conversion retained the two-score difference for West Jefferson 30-20.  The Roughriders would finish the game with its third extended scoring drive as Mitch Denes found the endzone on a 16-yard reverse play to cap a 10-play drive that took almost five minutes off the clock.  North Union would have one final series but it would end as the Roughriders’ Ross Brenneman’s interception would seal the victory for West Jeff.     The win advances West Jefferson to the Division V, Region 18 finals, its sixth trip to the regional championship during the last eight seasons.  The Roughriders will face Hamilton Badin (10-2) which has defeated Cincinnati Mariemont 37-13 and previously undefeated Cincinnati Hills Christian Academy 31-17 during the first two rounds of the playoffs.   The teams will meet at Clayton Northmont Good Samaritan Stadium this Saturday, November 23, kickoff is 7:00pm.  The winner will earn a spot in the Division V state final four and play the winner of the Region 16 matchup between the Coldwater Cavaliers and Huron Tigers.

Game Recap
by Roger Jester

Logan Stepp’s 11 yard touchdown run with 3:33 remaining and Tyler Jones interception sealed a fourth quarter comeback for West Jefferson.  The host Roughriders (10-1) scored two touchdowns in the final stanza to defeat the Waynesville Spartans (8-3) 42-38 and advance to round two of the playoffs.  Stepp had 32 rushing attempts for 200 yards with five touchdown runs (2, 14, 9, 15, 11) and completed 13 of 25 pass attempts for 206 yards and a touchdown.  The Riders took a 21-7 lead in the second quarter when Stepp found Nick Mendenhall for a 60 yard scoring strike.  Mendenhall finished with six receptions for 114 yards.   West Jeff went into the locker room with a 27-17 lead and received the kickoff in the second half.  However, two plays into the third quarter, Stepp’s errant pass was intercepted by a Spartans’ defender in Roughrider territory.    Waynesville cut the lead to 27-24 on a Troy Black completion to Isaiah Bauer.  The Spartans executed an onside kick and two plays later took the lead 31-27 on a 28-yard jaunt by Black.  Waynesville extended the gap to 38-27 late in the third quarter and the Riders found themselves in a position to fight from behind entering the fourth quarter.   West Jefferson got deep into Spartans territory early in the fourth quarter, but the drive stalled on fourth-and-one at the opponent’s 17 yardline.   Stops by Zach Thomas, DJ McAninch and Mitch Denes got the ball back for the Roughriders with 9:00 minutes remaining in the game.  Completions by Stepp to Mendenhall and Earl Braithwaite set up a sprint by Stepp from 15 yards out, followed by a 2-point conversion to cut the Spartans lead to 38-35 with seven minutes left on the clock.  On the next series, several Rider defenders, include Jake Hatfield, Trevor Ferguson, Steven Lollo, Hayden Fulton and two big tackles by Carter Harris forced the visitors into a punting situation.  A bad snap was recovered by McAninch at the Spartans 34 yard line to set up the game winning drive by West Jeff.  Waynesville had one final attempt in the last :28 seconds, but Cory Brown and Louis Weymss ended those hopes by tackling Black for a lost on the final play of the game.   West Jefferson will meet the North Union Wildcats in the Regional Semi-Finals next Saturday night.  Kickoff will be 7:00pm with the venue to be determined.
